Why Business Owners Need Vacation Time

business growth Jan 15, 2024

Hey there, it's Joey Vitale, and If you're one of those business owners grinding day in and day out, then the idea of taking a vacation probably seems laughable. But here's the thing. Not taking intentional time off is a rookie mistake that a lot of business owners make. This grind-first mentality needs to stop. This isn't just about taking time off; this is about fueling long-term success. In this blog post, I'm going to guide you through the importance of taking time off and its benefits that fit your business. We'll discuss the dangers of this constant work mentality and how taking time off can be one of your business's biggest secret weapons.

The Myth of Constant Hustle

Let's talk about this myth of constant hustle leading to success in your business because, if you're like most people I know, including myself, you grew up on this idea that if you want to be successful, you have to work hard. That was definitely the message that I received growing up, and it was the idea that I ran with when I started my business. And sure, I saw some quick gains just from working hard when I started. But let's be real. In my first year of business, I had a lot of stress, a lot of anxiety because I wasn't taking much time off. And it really cost me.

Redefining Success

I think it's time that we redefine what success means as a business owner. We talk a lot about revenue generation, and that's great, but business growth isn't just about revenue. It's also about time. Profit isn't just about money; it's also about time. So, if you're not designing your business to give you profit, including time left over to enjoy the money and other things you're getting, is it really worth it? Are we really building businesses that allow us to enjoy the wealth that we're creating?

The Power of Intentional Unplugged Vacations

That insight led me to see the beautiful power of taking intentional unplugged vacations. One of the key metrics that I need to be tracking in my business is how long can I step out of the business without things breaking. The more time you can take off, the better your business is. The key is to build a business that depends less and less on you because the business that depends on you the least is easier to sell. So, pull out your calendar and figure out the longest amount of time you can intentionally unplug over the next 90 days or six months. Make a plan and stick to it.

Setting Boundaries and Managing Email

Now, what does it mean to take intentional unplugged time off? You have to set your own boundaries. Does it mean no laptop, no email, or only being available for a certain amount of time? You really do have to respect those boundaries if you want to disconnect and recharge while you're gone. Speaking of boundaries, let's talk about emails. Emails can be one of the hardest things to manage and delegate. You want to build a team that can keep the business running while you're gone, and virtual assistants can be super helpful here.

Delegating and Elevating

Even if you're a solopreneur or have a small team, you want to continue to delegate and train people to do various things in your business. Over time, you'll be able to delegate more and more so that you can truly unplug for longer periods.

Start Small and Gradually Expand

I love going to Sicily as much as I can, and my goal is to take up a full month off every six months. But start small. Pick a time in the next month or two where you can take an intentional three-day weekend or a full week off without closing the business temporarily. Have your team continue to take care of clients, customers, marketing, and sales. When you come back, debrief to make the business more effective every time you take time off.

In conclusion, taking time off isn't a luxury; it's a strategic move for long-term success. Start by redefining your definition of success, setting boundaries, and gradually building a team that can keep the business running when you're away. Taking intentional unplugged vacations can be your secret weapon to business growth and personal well-being. So, go ahead, plan that time off, and watch your business thrive.
